When Tropical Storms and Hurricanes are approaching our area, if necessary, Charlotte County Emergency Operations may issue an evacuation notice for Palm Island. If that happens Palm Island Transit will go into Emergency Operations and operate a 24 hour service to get everyone off the island or until the Coast Guard says the we must shut down operations. Weather permitting we will run (2) ferrys during normal hours if possible and one (1) on the 24 hour operation if possible.
Charlotte County Fire and the EMS stop operations when wind speeds reach 45 mph sustained or greater during a Tropical Storm or Hurricane. Please keep this in mind as you make preparations for a storm.
When wind speeds reach 40 mph sustained, we will stop hauling high profile vehicles (semi-trucks, trailers, and large panel trucks, etc.). We will continue to make runs in-between squalls at the Captain’s discretion. At 45 mph sustained we will stop all operations and secure all vessels. After this we will not start back up until an all clear is issued and winds decrease to safe operating conditions.
Please limit your trips to as few as possible during these weather conditions.
WE URGE YOU TO BE PREPARED AND NOT TO WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE IF AN EVACUATION NOTICE IS GIVEN. PAY ATTENTION TO LOCAL WEATHER FOR UPDATES. PUT A PLAN TOGETHER NOW!
